I didn't make it out to run today, which means that I won't get my long run in this week. This will probably be the first long run I've missed in 2 years. I'm halfway through eight 12 hour shifts in nine days and tomorrow I switch to nights again so my circadian rhythm is all out of whack.
When I first started running marathons, I was given the (I believe) sage advice that you can miss runs here and there but don't skip the long runs. That's what gets you in trouble. So I didn't. No matter how tired or rainy or late or early, I always squeezed them in. But today... Today, after sleeping 12 hours I awoke to find myself still exhausted. I changed into my running clothes to head out for the run, and then changed immediately back into pajamas.
So I'm living life on the wild side. Being spontaneous. And I skipped my long run.
What did you do today?
Hey, I skipped my long run today and look at me!! Nevermind.
ReplyDeleteIts really weird skippping a run right? How do we implant this in ourselves? Its so WEIRD! But then you run, a long run AGAIN, and then your body screams happy songs like "THANKS FOR LETTING ME REST, and HOORAY I LOVE RUNNING!"
ReplyDeleteI worked today, I tredmilled it at lunch a 5k, I thought about a shower from 12:45 to right now... 4:49 :)
Skipped my long run due to single digit temps and a frigid windchill :( Made it up tonight though because like you said....Can't skip those long runs! But your body will be glad you rested.
ReplyDeleteLook at you living on the edge! Skipping a single run won't do anything though. It's skipping runs consistently or skipping two or three long runs in a row. Sometimes your body knows better and needs to rest :)
ReplyDelete2 years- you're awesome! No worries . . . I think you've earned a "pass" for this week's long run! Those are some crazy long and hard hours at work . . . you've got to leave something in the tank or else you'll get sick.
ReplyDeleteYou'll be fine. I promise.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry too much if it's the first in two years. And you really have to get enough rest to train well so you were actually giving yourself a special training session.
ReplyDeleteI skipped a couple of long runs and the world def didn't end. Don't worry about it my dear. Sometimes rest is soooooo much more important!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI know 2 important sayings: "never miss the long runs" and "listen to your body". Sometimes we must take the most appropriate decision. In my opinion you made the right thing.
ReplyDeletewhoa, never missed a long run?! i'm impressed! that's awesome. i say you'll be fine missing the one. annnnnd i won't tell you how many long runs i've missed in my day (and maybe that's why i never have super successful marathons?!).
ReplyDeletegood luck with work. yikes!
